Arts in corrections

We know that the school to prison pipeline impacts the most vulnerable members of our society, and that in the most under-resourced communities throughout our country as many as one fifth of the adult men are incarcerated at any given time.  As an organization that understands the role of the arts in empowering individuals to find their voices, share their stories and create positive change for themselves, Red Ladder’s commitments to our community members don’t stop if they enter the carceral system.  Indeed, we consider it our responsibility to work with individuals experiencing incarceration in an effort to restore their connection to their creativity and empower them, through their artistry, to build empathy, develop agency, and imagine a different outcome for themselves than the one(s) they were handed.  We believe that creative self-expression and the skills associated with artistic practice are an integral part of the rehabilitative process and can assist individuals in their personal transformation and their preparations for a successful return to their families and communities.

Arts in Corrections/Rehabilitative Programming

The methods employed by the Red Ladder Theatre Company have had a tremendous impact on both the substance abuse program and the inmate literacy project. It is an innovative and exciting project that should be a model for other correctional programs.
— Taylor L. Willingham, Former Director, The Reading Program
Now I know I am somebody. Before, I had bought a terrible lie. But through these workshops I find myself standing on the rubble of a smashed barrier. Now I know anything is possible for me.
— James, participant from Elmwood Correctional Facility

Curriculum and In-School Programming

Red Ladder has become a leader in performing arts curriculum development.  Many of the schools with whom Red Ladder works have limited or non-existent arts education programs.  Red Ladder understands the power of the arts to reach students, especially those with non-traditional learning styles, and help them make sense of the world around them.  The company was deemed a Demonstration Project by the California Arts Council, and has developed a broad range of activities that meet the State of California’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards and are in line with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Further, Red Ladder successfully executes curriculum based on the Studio Thinking Framework/Studio Habits of Mind with its participants.

Community Enrichment programs

Red Ladder is committed to providing programming to the members of our community who need it most.  Whether that’s seniors in our Japantown community, youth in the foster system, neuro-atypical youth and adults, pregnant and parenting teens or Veterans and their families, we strive to deliver workshops designed to ignite the imagination, encourage the creativity, develop the problem-solving skills, promote the positive risk-taking, acknowledge the potential and build the courage of our participants.  Whether it’s a finite series of workshops or an ongoing relationship, Red Ladder works to strengthen our community by amplifying the voices of those within it who often, otherwise, go unheard.

Professional development

For years, Red Ladder has provided professional development workshops for artists and educators.  Hundreds of individuals have been trained through workshops that the company has led at annual conferences such as the Marion Cilker Conference for Arts Education (“The Arts Really Teach”), the Arts in Your Classroom Conference at Montalvo Arts Center, CCSESA’s Creativity at the Core Summer Institute, the One Theatre World (OTW) conference, as well as through the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s “Artspiration” initiative, the South Bay Arts Education Collaborative, the California Arts Project, the City of San Jose’s Arts Express program, as well as workshops that the company has offered directly to participants.  As part of this training, the company has developed a theatre arts activities handbook for use by other practitioners.

Professional Development Programming

This is one of the best workshops I have ever been to! It was fun and extremely engaging, and I see immediate ways to implement this in my classroom. I hope I can take more workshops with [Red Ladder]. The only thing that would make it better is if it was longer.
— Participant at Marion Cilker
